How to refinish an old cast iron bathtub?

How to refinish old cast iron bathtub. The finish (porcelain) is almost gone, also has chips, surface is ruff, like sandpaper

  • My vote is to have profesionally reglazed. That will solve all your problems and will no longer be rough.

From that point on do not use abrasive cleansers. Bar Keepers Friend is the strongest you can use. Ajax, Comet will scrub the finish right off.

You really cant refinish a porcelain tub, but you can have it prof. painted, some call it glazing but it is actually just epoxy paint for the inside. If you're careful with it should last a few years. I have to get mine done every 3 or 4 years. 3 years ago cost $375. Once scratched will peel. The outside of tub you can just sand, prime and paint with oil based paint. That lasts about forever. At least mine has lasted so far 38 year and still looks great. Wish the inside could.

There are professional companies that do this. I had my cast iron tub repainted and it has held up very well in the last couple of years since they did it.

Keep in mind that you cannot use suction mats in the reglazed tub. Also you cannot use certain shampoos, conditioners and hair color. Good luck with your project
