Does a bathroom require a bath tub?

My husband put in a bathroom off from our master bedroom. We want to redo the main bathroom in our home. However, neither of the bathrooms are large. I am encouraging tiling with a nice size shower, but my husband says for resale value we need a tub. The other bathroom, has a small shower.

I agree with your husband. Resale is better with a tub. Try washing a toddler in a shower. you both get really wet. Could it be done as a wet room?

If you plan to resell, I would suggest having a least 1 tub in the home. Families with children looking to purchase a home will want a tub to bathe children. If you don't plan to resell, I would do what works best for your family.

  • Your husband is correct. If you even think you might sell, you need one tub in the house. Both my bathrooms have tubs and my house is small by most standards. This is not my "forever" home so I am leaving as is. Do your own poll, call random realtors in your area and see what they tell you.

If you are in a retirement or over 55 community, you are okay with no tub. If not, I advise that at least one bathroom have a tub for resale purposes.

Hi Nancy. Having a bath tub is good for resale. However my parents got rid of their tub and just had a walk in shower and they sold the house just fine. No one that saw the house even commented that their wasn't a tub. I do think more and more people are doing this. My mother in law also turned hers into a walk in shower. It is more convenient for them and if it is for you I would say go for it. Hope this helps!
