How can I gut my bathroom for under $3000?
My bathroom is highly outdated, and the previous owners just did small updates that are not exactly up to code. It's a small room with a closet that is just too large, my knees literally touch my tub while sitting on the toilet. I would like to revamp my bathroom by gutting it and redoing the entire room. I just don't know where to start or how I can do this under $3000. HELP!

Here's what we did for under $3,000. We did most of the work ourselves, except for the plumbing.
If you are budget conscious this should definitely be doable. I would start by figuring the square footage ( l x w ) of the bathroom. Now go shopping...not to buy, just to price items. Take careful, precise notes of prices, how much of an item come in a container, etc. Gut the bathroom (provided you have another to use during renovations). Buy your goodies. Tile first, paint next, install vanity, toilet, fixtures.
Paint will probably be your best friend! If you have tiles that are in good shape, you could stencil them, and then paint your walls a light color to make the space feel more open (I love pale gray). Find a couple of inexpensive mirrors on Craigslist to make it feel even bigger, and then you should have enough money leftover to replace the toilet, tub and vanity as long as you buy on sale or from places like Overstock. Good luck!
Even a DIY, $3 grand is a stretch unless you have plumbers in your back pocket that work for free. If you do a total gut job and want to move things like the toilet, you need to pull permits first, and yes, there are fees. Wait a bit longer till you can save up a bit more money. In the interim, get quotes from plumbers to see how much it would cost to move the plumbing. Then set your new budget and wait till you have enough available cash.
