We want to update our master bathroom. It is small so we want to make the most of the space. The shower is in dire need of help. Imbarrassed to show in picture so just taking picture of bathroom. Would be interested in some kind of insert for the shower. We currently have carpet and want to change to some kind of flooring. Again we are on a budget. Daughter in college and going abroad next semester.

I would put in a recessed cabinet with a sliding mirror to organize all those bottle that are on the sink and back of the toliet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsrjXGGSqGM&t=257s

Hi Lad! The beauty of a small bathroom is that even high end finishes can be affordable because so little material is required.

    Here's what we did:

    1) design it the way you want it to look. Pick finishes and styles based on what you truly like without concern for the cost.

    2) prioritize the project. Not only what you want to have done first, but what makes sense. For example, if you are going to remove the cabinet, then plan to lay flooring at the same time.

    3) keep your eyes peeled. We would go into all the home improvement stores, craigslist and building supply salvage yards frequently looking for our first choices on sale, clearance, or leftovers. Doing this, we saved between 50-75% on nearly everything.

    4) be patient. If you don't see what you want for the price you need, then just wait patiently and continue to collect the materials you want.

Here's a before and after to give you an idea of how much changed.

If the floor under the carpet is in good shape you can remove the carpet and my recommendation would be Luxury Vinyl Tile, either in the form of tiles, sheet vinyl, or planks. Easy to install yourself, waterproof, scratch resistant, and can be cut to fit around the base of your vanity, shower and toilet. Not knowing the material in your shower (fiberglass, tile etc.) all I can say is that you can buy panels to go on the walls, even kits that include a shower pan, but I have never removed a shower so I am no expert there. There are companies that will come in and do it for you (Bathfitters for instance) but I have no idea what the cost would be. I would remove the mirror above the sink (carefully) and replace it with a surface mount tri-mirror medicine cabinet. Every house we have been in has pipes directly behind the sink in the wall including vent pipes, so a recessed cabinet might not work. The tri-mirror is the one thing I miss in our current house. If you don't have one already in your vanity I would build a shelf that would be cut out in the middle to go around the water pipes and drain pipe to add more storage under the sink. Paint the vanity and the walls and a few new towels would make a world of difference in the room.

One thing a person can do on a budget is look at the "oops" section at Lowe's or Home Depot.. This is where the paints that are returned or mixed wrong are.. You can get a gallon of paint for $10 or less.. Another thing that I do is to get the sample size.. If you have a small wall, you don't need to buy a gallon. I did a small bathroom wall with just 1..Once you clean off the counter it will look like a bigger bathroom.. get baskets to put those items in and you can just pull out the basket and use it and put it back.. If you keep your towels in the cabinet, find a new place for them. I have a shelf in the closet that works.. or paint an old dresser or tv stand to hold them..
