Refinish old formica countertops without fumes

I need to refinish 20+ old yr. formica countertops, but I MUST be careful about fumes. any suggestions? The additional problem is the same formica has been used on the side of the garden tub surround, and where the countertops meet the wall there's blue tile. Several years ago we replaced the carpet with a slate looking laminate, and would like the new coutertops to blend with the more rustic look. now.
Garden tub with same formica on top and on sides. (I know I need to get rid of the old carpet too.)
This is the blue tile I mentioned which is on all the places were the countertop touches the wall.

Anything you use will have some fumes. No way around it.

That's true. Anything in the line of painting over Formica will have some fumes...even those paints that are low, no -VOC. Hopefully someone else will have some other ideas........

have you thought about contact paper? Our daughter bought a foreclosure and I did the counters with contact paper - worked out extremely well

Concrete. It can be done in a thin layer over the formica. The only inhalation concern is from the powder and sealants. It should go well with a rustic look and be fairly inexpensive. Here's a link for more details on hazards of working with concrete and you can find many how to articles here on hometalk. http://elcosh.org/document/1563/d000513/cement-hazards-and-controls-health-risks-and-precautions-in-using-portland-cement.html

Actually I like the counter top. Is it damaged? I would maybe paint the cabinet to make it look a little better or closer to what you want. I have also seen someone use contact paper in the kitchen, around water I didn't think it would work but it held up pretty well with some extra care taken with sitting water.

best product i ever used found online was Daich products countertop epoxy paint with ground up stone mixed in. i used beige w/ back, white, red flecks but i think they have blsck granite look. i used on formica and ceramic tile backsplash comes with 3 cans..base paint, stone 2nd ciat that u sand and clear rock hard top coat. not a fast fix but worth every minute. i didnt notice bad fumes but ALL paint has some smell. open windows use a portable fan and if. necessary mask or respirator...which u can rent
