A pedestal or wall-mounted sink takes up the least amount of space....however, neither type provides for any storage. In a small bathroom, since storage is at a premium, I would try to fit a small cabinet with a one piece top. It will add a small amount of storage and have a clean, uncluttered look.

I know the frustration... our "master bathroom" seemed like an after-thought. It had a shower, a sink and a toilet. It was so narrow that the opposing doors touched each other when opened. It is only 41" wide by 88" long (wall behind toilet to front edge of shower pan). We remodeled ourselves and wanted more space. It was usual to bend over the sink and bump the wall with your derriere. We blew out the wall spacer (wasted space) on one side of the 28" x 28" shower pan and put in a 28" x 40" shower pan. As for the sink / vanity. A "standard" vanity is 21" deep from the back wall. In our case, that would take up half of the available space. Enter IKEA. We got this sink / vanity. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29206393/

It's less than 11" deep which provides a lot of walk-by room. You can't take a bath in it, but it's adequate for normal use. We also mounted the vanity directly to the wall about 6" above the floor and did not use the legs. This provides easy access underneath for cleaning. There is also some storage underneath the sink, though it will be much less than a standard vanity. But, honestly, most people keep way more stuff under their sink than they need or even use. We chose a single handle open spout design bath faucet. Note: the hot and cold supply lines need to be reversed for a left-side mounted faucet so that cold is towards the front and hot is towards the back to meet ADA guidelines. BTW.. I highly recommend shower curtains over glass shower doors. Curtains, especially with the curved rod, provide more room, are easier to keep clean (throw in the wash) and can be easily changed if damaged or for style reasons. Also, we changed the swinging door on the bedroom side to an outside mounted rolling barn-door. This gives even more sense of space to such a small room. Check out the photos.
