Tub surround remodel to studs: use tar paper or 4ml behind Hardiback?

    You need a moisture barrier. I have never heard of hardiback.

    Use the 4 mil plastic behind the cement board. Tar paper was used back in the day when plastic sheeting was not available. It eventually breaks down over time anyway.

    There are several new varieties of dry wall made for "wet" locations like bathrooms... we used the "purple one... and if you are installing tile behind the tub or in a shower... you will want to use the cement "hardybacker" or tile backer... AND to use one of the waterproofing membrane systems as well.... the cost and labor involved will be well worth it.
