In July, I posted a query about flooring/wallpaper questions as I have been staging my Mom's old Victorian home pretty much all Summer long. The total cost of this room's flip was $55!
I paid $40 for this toy chest that I bought on-line. Sorry, I don't have the before pictures. It was stained a very dark brown with a thick lacquer finish.
I sanded it with fine paper using my random orbital sander to remove all that hideous finish. I applied a Sherwin Williams Provence Blue stain, then distressed it slightly once it dried using steel wool. Then, I applied 3 coats of Minwax antique oil with a foam brush. This photo is a before the oil was applied.
Here is an after shot with the oil. You can also see that the flooring is in very sad shape. We had to pull the 40+ year old carpeting. I would have loved to have had the time to sand those lovely old pine floor boards and restore them to their original glory but we'll have to leave that job to the new owners.
My folks are downsizing so they sold many of their pieces at auction. I really wanted a headboard to finish off the room. I went to my local Restore and bought 3 cabinet doors for $5 each.
The cabinet doors were covered in a dark brown chalk paint. I washed it off using Minwax hardwood floor cleaner. Then, I applied 3 coats of Minwax antique oil. I used 2 pieces of scrap lumber and attached the headboard together with screws.
I used some leftover white paint to refresh the baseboards. I gently sanded the floor boards and vacuumed all the dust. Then, painted the boards with some leftover porch paint. I added a little white to the mixture to lighten the color a little. Hope you get inspired - a $15 headboard is an amazing deal!

I think you did an awesome job with what you had and better than most people would do with 5 times the budget...great job!
