A few months ago I gave my daughters nursery a makeover into what is now her “big girl” bedroom. I had so much fun working on a child’s bedroom, I wanted to do another! It’s so different getting to work with bright colours and bold patterns, and it’s not something I typically incorporate into the main living areas of my home.

When I asked my son exactly how he wanted his room too look he told me “Frogs, jungle, dinosaurs, with a touch of video games” Yikes!

I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to incorporate ALL of that into one bedroom without having it look like that theme. My goal was to create a fun and playful room that my son loves, but also flows well with the rest of our home and would still be appealing to adults.

In the end I am so happy with how this mini room makeover turned out, and most importantly my son absolutely adores it!

Here is a glimpse of the room before. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, it is a cute boys room… However it just didn’t suit my sons personality and I really wanted to make his dream bedroom a reality. I will be keeping all of the big items in the room and working with what I have for this project. If you have been following me for some time, you will know I’m all about saving money and decorating on a budget!

I’m a huge believer in trying to work with what you have.

For this room, I wanted to try doing a two tone wall colour. I have seen so many different variations of this, some people will use painters tape to separate the colours while others have created beautiful ombré effects. I was going for a crisp and clean look so I decided to use a simple piece of mdf trim to separate the two colours.

i went around the whole perimeter of the room and using a pencil I marked 13” down from the crown molding. These little marks would act as a guide for where to place the trim.

Because we live in an older home and walls and floors aren’t always perfectly level and square, I decided to measure off of the crown molding and not the floor. This ensured that the new trim piece would run perfectly parallel to the crown molding and give the illusion that everything is perfectly level and square.

With the help of my husband, we cut and installed the pieces of trim around the whole room. Since the trim was so light we did not use any adhesive to hold it in place. The nail gun was more than enough to hold it.

Once the trim was all installed, I filled all of the nail holes, and caulked all the seams with paintable caulking. It was then time to paint!

I did let my son choose the paint colours for his own room, out of a few that I had selected ahead of time. This still gave him the option to chose his own colours, while still keeping it visually appealing to me. In the end I’m so happy with the colour combo that he chose, and I was secretly hoping that he would pick these two colours, as they work so well together. The piece of trim really gives it a crip professional looking finish.

Once the paint was dry it was time to put everything back together and decorate! Other than the paint, the only thing I really changed in the room was the duvet cover, and I added in a few things that I found around my house.

I incorporated the “frog” and “dinosaur” theme to the room by hanging two large framed posters. These were previously In the room, however now they really work well against the green wall and tie everything together.

I also displayed some frog books and a video game book to add to the theme. I love using art work and books as decor in kids rooms. This makes it feel so special for them, but can be easily swapped out as they grow or change interests.

I also hung up these wall gems as they reminded me and my son of the “gems” you collect in video games. I think they add a fun and subtle visual interest to the room.

I just love how this room turned out, and it might even be one of my favorite rooms in the house now! The green and orange colour combination is so fun, yet somehow still feels neutral and relaxing. I think the room flows really well with the rest of our home and is definitely something he can grow into. It’s amazing what a difference just a few simple changes can make.

Now to start planning for my eldest sons room!

The two tone color combo you chose adds movement and energy appropriate to a child's room, without being overdone.

By swapping out the books and accessories, the decor can easily grow with your son as he gets older and as his favorite objects and animals change.👍️

Yes, that was my goal! He has had many different “favorites” over the years. Thankfully he has always loved the colour green 😊
