GEORGIAN DRAWERS CHALK PAINTED

Since discovering chalk paint on Pinterest it took a while to track it down in New Zealand but I finally sourced a reasonably priced product from Ali Newton (Newtons Chalk Paint Finishes) who runs her own business from her home in Auckland. I work at an auction house cataloguing antiques and collectibles, etc so am in a perfect position to pick up pieces to work with. I bought this Georgian mahogany chest of drawers in one of our monthly antique sales for $350 to chalk paint and put in my red hallway in my 110 year old house.
First started off just cleaning it down and taking the handles off. That was the worst bit, the screws were old and seized up. This is my fourth piece of antique furniture that I have chalk painted and I find taking the handles off in one piece and not wrecking the screws the hardest part of the project.
I then painted the sides, drawer fronts and feet with three coats of yellow. Followed this up by carefully painting the drawer sides and tops in red.
After letting all the paint dry overnight I then waxed it with a clear wax. I let that dry and harden overnight and put a couple of coats of brown antique wax over the entire chest. I also polished the unpainted top and front of the chest with the brown antique wax.
After putting the handles back on (what a trial that was) and one final massive buff up of the whole piece I then moved it into the hallway to sit under a Regency (early 19th Century) mirror that I had chalk painted in yellow, then red, then green. I am over the moon with the results.
Enjoyed the project?
