How to Use Wall Spackling, a Stencil and Paint for a GLAM Look

This old dresser had a few dings and flaws but was not too far gone to create a brand new glam look with inexpensive products.
Here she is, just home from the auction.
1st step is always to clean her up and prepare the surface for a new look. I wanted to stain the top, but as you can see it wasn't in great shape even after sanding. I used Pre-stain to help even out the finish when it was stained.
Using an all over wall stencil and spackling, I applied the stencil to the drawer fronts with an old credit card. This is easy, but time consuming because you must wait for the spackling to dry between passes.
I painted the body and drawer with a gold metallic paint, followed up with a coat of polyurethane to protect the water based stencil. Let it dry overnight.
Painted the body with a mixture of paints I mixed together as I applied it to give the finish more depth and interest. This was homemade chalk paint I made with paint samples and Plaster of Paris.
three paint colors mixed as I go.
I distressed it to show off the gold paint base coat.
Here's the main reason I used poly after the gold base coat. I knew I wanted to distress the stenciled pattern after painting, and I needed a little more protection so I wouldn't scrub off the gold on the raised stencil too easily.

Used Gold metallic Rub and Buff over the drawer details to highlight.
soft rag to apply the detailed highlights.
Spray painted the old hardware with Rust-oleum gold metallic paint. Followed with antiquing glaze and protective clear top coat.
Stained the top with General Finishes Java Gel stain and Gel Top coat. Lined the drawer with fabric with Mod Podge.
Now she's ready for her new home!

This piece is so beautimous! I am doing something similar on a small accent table currently. I was researching how to distress to reveal the raised stencil color below the top color gently enough without taking off the coating and metallic. Looks like you used a Brillo or scrubber of some kind to reveal the stencil. Is that what it is? Was it damp?

thanks so much! I sold it to a nice older lady who had her children buy it for her for her birthday. She told me she was going to use it in her bedroom. I often wonder what happens to the pieces after I sell them. :)
