My son is tree years old now and he comes sleeping in our bed every night. i'm starting having bad night sleep because of his punches and kicks. so we ended by letting him sleeping with us but believe me it's not the best solution, he really needs to sleep in his own bed it's very recommended by his pediatrician. but i don't blame him to come in our bed each night. he said that his crib is small and not cozy lol! and he is absolutely right. so i started looking here and there for a bed. but i had a certain vision for this bed that i couldn't find the perfect match for it. beside his room is very small. it was okay for a crib but for a bed and desk and toys that was to tiny to fit everything.

after a long reflection i came up with this idea to create the bed i wanted.

the bed should be:

  • multifunctional: making a daybed with storage
  • upcycling items: transforming the crib to a twin bed and repurposing a cute upholstered foot board ordered by mistake and it was time for it to empty the garage.
  • low cost: few purchase to finish up the project
  • cute: attracting look

lets see how i did it. don't forget to check the step by step video.

the crib was made with sturdy wood and it will be such waste to get rid of it and buy something with an inferior quality.

the bed had some scratches on the sides due to baby teething. some coats of paint were essential. the crib can turn in full bed but the room is very small for that.

what i will use from the crib?

i'll use the big sides from the crib to make the head and foot board and will trim the excess to get a twin XL bed 38 x 80 inches.

the crib is short, so i have to make an additional pieces to make it higher also to make both horizontal sides of the bed. i bought 2 pine boards of 4 inches wide and 1 pine board 8 inches width and 8 feet tall, and another 4 inches width and 8 foot tall all from Lowes.

in total it was 4 board at 70 dollars.

i cut 2 of them to 45 degrees angle and did so for the head and foot board. but only one side the other side was just trimmed and connected to the sides.

as you see in the picture, the right side is the 45 degrees angle which will be connected to the upholstered piece of the daybed. and in the left you see the other side that i cut a rectangle of 8 inches to fit the board used to connect the head and footboard. this way the board will be flush and has better looking.

i decided to add 2 small sticks to cover the front of the head and foot board.

i painted everything in semi gloss popcorn white color from behr brand in case you like the color. the semi gloss is very recommended for kids, its very easy to clean though.

ones everything is painted and dried, i started the assembly in my son's room. in the back i will place a board to reinforce the bed.

i screwed the head and footboards to the green upholstered piece. as i mentioned, this was a king bed foot board ordered by mistake and the vendor asked me to keep it. you can use any other board to create the back of the day bed if you are making the same thing.

i used the kreg jig to make this back board be assembled and connected better.

i placed a metal rail and a twin XL box spring foundation inside the bed that i already had and assembled the front board from side to side.

i left a room for an 8 inches mattress since the box is 8 inches high, so i don't want the bed to be very high for my son.

i uses brass bars to highlight the head and footboard and make a reminder of the green and brass upholstered daybed back. i ve got them from amazon long time ago and though that they will match very good with it.

the addition of the 2 bars on the sides gives a beautiful look, also it hides any imperfection on the front of the bed. Because it will be visible, we used a pretty screws for a better display.

this is how it turned out. it's big, comfy and the most important, my son likes it.

i also reused the drawer that was in the crib. i'll place 4 wheels and its perfect for extra storage.

the decoration is not done yet but i used the nightstand that i upgraded last year and it looks very good with the daybed. i made some wall decor diy and painted a crab canvas for him.
