French Farmhouse Headboard Bench

Several years ago, I picked up a french provincial head and foot board at a garage sale for $5. (ETA: There were no side rails, which is why it was only $5.) I intended to make a bench with it but when I got it home, I realized the foot board was much too low to attach the seat. So, it languished in my shop. Sometimes, it takes a long time for problem-solving inspiration to strike.
Several months ago, inspiration struck. Why not put the seat platform up where it should be and put baskets in the open space?! As you can see, that's just what I did. I purchased the baskets from Ikea first so I would know what size to make the openings. Because this was a design-as-you-build project with lots of fiddle-factor, I didn't make a tutorial. There are lots of them online, anyway. I do have a few progress shots to give you an idea how I built it.
I used mostly scrap wood but I did buy bead board for the ends and some trim for the front.
I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Napoleonic Blue and sealed it with Rustoleum ultimate polyurethane in matte. Visit my blog post for more details!
