When we loaded this yard sale headboard into the truck, my husband saw junk. I, however, saw something fabulous. And I knew it was going to be a fun do it yourself project.
I cut off the legs then filled the holes where the bed rails would go with Swamp Mud from the Dixie Belle Paint Company.
I let the Swamp Mud dry over night. The next day, I sanded the Swamp Mud until it was smooth and then gave the headboard a fresh coat of paint using the Dixie Belle color, Drop Cloth.
To make the chalkboard section, I traced around the outside of the headboard and the inside opening of the headboard onto a piece of plywood.
I used a jigsaw to cut between the lines drawn on the plywood.
To create the chalkboard, I painted 3 coats of Dixie Belle's Midnight Sky onto the plywood.
Once the paint was dry, I conditioned the chalkboard by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the board, then wiped it clean. This will prevent the chalk from leaving a permanent impression when you write on the board.
Finally, the chalkboard was added to the opening in the headboard with nails.
The chalkboard fits perfectly above a mantel and will be fun to change up for each season.
