From Nursery to Teen's Room to Guest Room

How do you update a nursery turned boys room, to a guest room without breaking the budget? Decorating a bedroom for a little boy is fun, but when they become teenagers it can be a tad more difficult. We reused all of the furniture and gave it a rustic makeover that a teenager will like, and future guests will find stylish and comfortable.
A customer came to us because she had a lot of her son’s nursery furniture, that was well made. She wanted to keep the pieces because of the sentimentality, but her son had definitely outgrown the current use of the furniture. She also wanted to have the furniture redone in a way that could easily convert to a guest bedroom when her son moved out.
These are the before furniture pieces:
We wanted it to have a rustic feel by incorporating barn board. For the headboard, we attached a board along the back to connect both ends of the crib. Then to give it a more mature look we added barn board on the centers of each section.
Also, our customer wanted us to turn the bookcase into a desk. That was the fun part! We repositioned the shelves and John built the desk top and legs from the same barn board. It easily inserted inside and then we attached it to the shelf with a couple of screws from the underneath side.
We painted all of the furniture black, using Valspar’s Lincoln Cottage Black.
Right now, our customer's son is happily chilling in his new bedroom, and (hopefully) doing his homework at the desk.
