Fusion Mineral Paint Face Lift

I have an old chest my grandpa made. When I received it, it needed a face lift then. The stain was sticky and my dad (who owns a body shop) spray painted it white for me because I was too intimidated to paint it.

It's a little hard to tell in this picture but over the years, the stain has started to show through the white spray paint.

I was given the opportunity to try Fusion Mineral Paint and please note this is my first big furniture painting project...

We (my husband and I) sanded the old paint down. Now you can see the original stain coming through.

I wiped the chest down with a damp wash cloth.

I used Fusion Mineral Paint - and picked the color Casement. I bought a paint brush at Home Depot. It was an all purpose brush since I'm an inexperienced painter.

This is a picture after the first coat. If you look close you can see I definitely would need more coats to cover up that old stain.

I love that it is a water based paint - easy to clean out of my brush.

I ended up putting 4 coats of paint on it to get good coverage. Probably would have been good with 3, but I did 4 just to be safe.

Here is a good comparison after the fourth coat - the outside is the Fusion Mineral Paint, the inside is the old spray paint where the stain was showing through.

Because this chest gets a lot of use, I opted to use the clear tough coat to protect it.

I did the two recommended coats. I was worried about using the cloth technique they suggested so I painted it...

Whoops, if you look close I had put too much on in a few places and ended up with some yellowing on the lid.

I lightly sanded but you could still see the yellow. I ended up re-painting 2 more coats of the Fusion Mineral Paint and let that dry.

I carefully wiped on the clear tough coat the second try with a damp microfiber cloth. This time success, and I actually put a 3rd coat on for good measure.

I kept some of the personality the chest had from my grandpa. It still has the dings and I wanted to keep those traits - the years of love.

I cleaned up the original hinges & latch, and we screwed it back on exactly as it was. So the lid still sits a little crooked, and the screws are still silver even though the latch is brass. It is still my grandpa's chest. It just now has a face lift.

I'm really happy with how it turned out. I would definitely use Fusion Mineral Paint again - it was a great paint to work with. I ran out of the paint, so I may need to buy some more to paint the inside of the chest...
