I love to add patterns to my painted furniture. I love the extra color . I love the added dimension. I love draw the eye to special details in each piece. I love the personality. So here's how I painted three basic patterns on furniture: black and white stripes, harlequin (diamonds) and tiny checkerboards.
This colorful chest of drawers has examples of all my signature patterns. The whimsy of black and white stripes frame the edge and set the tone for balanced chaos!
To paint these black and white stripes, first paint the base coat first and let fully dry. Then determine stripe size wanted and tape off. Use same color paint as base coat to seal the edge of your tape on the same side that you will be adding new color. Let it dry then paint new color stripe.  While it's still wet, remove tape for a perfect "no-bleed" stripe.
I love a harlequin pattern ... especially using my favorite combo of coral and hot pink together!
To paint a harlequin pattern without taping, first let the base coat dry.
You'll determine harlequin height and make the width will be exactly half the height.  Make a template of your diamond with paper and trace your diamond side by side onto the surface you are painting.  Using an angled brush...fill each diamond that you drew with paint. You can get my list of my favorite paint brushes for painting these details here, including my best angled brush!
The tiny checkerboard again adds balance and makes a great inset pattern to help showcase the furniture's carvings and details.
To paint a tiny checkerboard pattern, paint the base coat first and let fully dry.
Determine size of check and measure with a straight edge, marking both horizontally and vertically.  Use a straight edge to draw lines based on your markings and use a tiny flat artist brush fill in every other square with paint.
I hope you love seeing how I painted and combined these lovely patterns into one outrageous dresser.
