How to Paint Wood to Look Old and Weathered

My original idea to paint a big, clunky desk hot pink wasn't looking so hot. Instead, I cut the desk in half to repurpose as a small chest of drawers and added leftover fence boards on top for a more rustic look. Then I used a combination of two simple paint techniques to make the fence wood look old and weathered. Finally, that hot pink had to go! I decided to by painting the chest a pretty spring green called Kudzu from Dixie Belle Paints---perfect for spring.
I originally decoupaged gold and pink cherry blossom napkins on the top drawer and painted the other drawers hot pink to match. You may be thinking: Who in the world would buy a hot pink desk? Yeah...I started thinking that too...
My mom had a great idea to pry off the top, cut the desk in half and transform what remained into a more rustic style chest of drawers.
I painted over all of that hot pink with a soft spring green color called Kudzu from Dixie Belle Paint. I didn't sand the drawers. I didn't prime them. I just opened a can and started painting. The first coat covered about 90% of those hot pink drawers. The second coat covered them completely---and looked amazing. I decoupaged a new napkin design on the top drawer.
I had a couple of leftover boards out in my garage from repairing our fence last spring. I cut them to fit the top of the new chest of drawers and used two simple painting techniques---color washing and dry brushing---to make them look old and weathered.

Here's our latest DIY Video showing you exactly how I did it.
