In Love With Blue

A few months ago, I saw a post on a Facebook group and absoluetly fell in love! Two wonderful ladies refinished an antique desk using only one colour of stain, Blue Thunder by Unicorn SPiT, and a little bit of gold and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen! I just had to try it for myself. You can see their creation here https://www.facebook.com/UnicornSpit/posts/957228757658355.
So this is what I started with. It had definitely seen better days! First, I completely sanded it down.
Once I sanded it down, I ran into a problem. There were two perfectly round circles on the top that would not come off! I suspect they were from hot pots being placed on the top. That is how this design came to be...
Perfect for hiding pot rings!
I absolutely LOVE this technique! It's called stain shading. Check out the talented furniture artist who invented it at Realitydaydream.com ( formerly Sawdust and Embryos). She has some awesome tutorials to get you started!
After that, I stained the entire piece with Unicorn SPiT's Blue Thunder, trimmed the drawers and legs with gold furniture wax by Cottage Paint, and voila! My favourite piece!
It blows my mind how one colour of stain and bring out so many tones in the wood.
I used 4 coats of polyurethane by Minwax to give the top a super glossy coat.
Moral of the story; don't be scared to try something new or bold. If you have the right products, you can create something you love too!
