Saving pieces from the curb, one at a time seems to be what we've been doing lately and this one was no exception. We took this quality solid wood nightstand destined for the trash and transformed it into the perfect piece for my son's room using a beautiful navy blue.

Sad and rough. That's the shape I would call this nightstand when we found it there were scratches all over, it had stickers on the back and its previous owner carved their initials into it.Well we began by using a heat gun to remove the stickers. Then we used krud kutter to clean the entire piece. After rinsing we sanded down the piece to prep for primer.

We scuff sanded the body so the primer would have good adhesion and sanded the top down to raw wood because those carved initials were deep!

So much better! We then used shellac spray to prime, spraying a coat, letting it dry and then using a flexible sanding pad to smooth out any bumps, making sure to remove any dust with a tack cloth. We then used a Homeright paint sprayer called the finish max to apply General Finishes tinted poly in Coastal Blue. Using a paint gun saves a lot of time and allows for a professional like factory finish with no brush strokes. This particular gun is very affordable too, so that's a plus. We sprayed three coats of the tinted poly in Coastal Blue, lightly sanding in between with a high grit sanding pad. We usually use anywhere between a 600 grit and 1000 grit between spray applications. We made sure to remove any sanding dust with a tack cloth because there is nothing worse than getting your final layer on and noticing those pesky particles. The tinted poly dries very quickly so this project was completed in an afternoon!

Here is a close up of that smooth finish. That satin finish is perfect for those pieces that need some extra protection.and can be cleaned easily. Tinted poly is exactly what it sounds like, a colored poly once you have your third coat down you are set! No need for any additional or extra sealants.

Isn't this just the perfect navy? Coastal Blue is definitely one color to add to your collection. It turned out just as we had hoped and now serves as the perfect nightstand for my son and his treasures.
