Old Furniture Piece Makeover

I’ve had this mini dresser piece for years. I’ve wanted to change it up for our new home.

I had this piece that has seen better days. The painting was just not my color choice. I use it for all things girlie. I should of took a photo before when the drawers were in but forgot.

I first removed all the drawers and hardware. I made a bowl of water, dawn, and vinegar and placed the hardware in it to get clean. Soaking it for an hour. Then I did a light scrub, rinse and towel dry on the hardware.

My first step on the dresser piece was using Citristrip.

I followed instructions on the bottle.

I wanted to get as much paint off as I could to start.

The Citristrip did not take the paint off as well as I wanted. That could be because of user error. It was my first time using that specific product.

I then decided to bring out my handy orbital sander with 120 grit paper. I sanded all the pieces. This takes time… Always do it outdoors with a mask on.

My goal was to get to the natural color wood and then seal it. I loved the color of the wood until….

I noticed after the sanding they repaired a few of the drawers with different material other than real wood. That was a huge defeating moment. I did not want to go through the process of spending more money on wood for it and all that it would Entail to fix it perfectly.

It was now time for plan “B”. I went out and purchased 3 bottles of Rustoleum paint.

I stepped out of the box with my color choice. It was not planned as I seen the color and thought why not try it.

Sometimes you just have to decide in the paint isle.

I actually liked the color. I took my time to do light coats as I am not considered the best spray painter. I can paint with a brush and roller but with spray paint let’s just say I’m not the best.

I actually didn’t do to bad. No noticeable runs this time. Lol

I put the clean hardware back on and I have to say I actually like the way it turned out.

Thank you for checking out my project. It may have turned out much different than I had planned in the first place but I think it ended up looking good.

Hi! Citristrip can be challenging. I only do small sections at a time. That way

the next section is ready to scrape and scrub if I apply it just before the section I have applied it to about 10 minutes before. If it's a little too dry, a quick application of the stripper works well for softening it up. I use a soft bristle scrub brush after I scrape the thickest stuff off. I usually buy them at the dollar store since theirs are fairly soft and it doesn't upset me if I ruin it. I've done a few plan B's myself and yours came out really nice!

    • I agree with you on doing smaller sections at first. Plus, the time to set in needed to be shortened.

      Thank you for the comment.
