Thrift Store Table Makeover

Furniture flips are addictive, don't you think?

It never stops amazing me just how transformational paint can be, changing the entire personality of a piece.

And when you can snag a piece for a great price at a thrift store...it gets even sweeter.
When I saw this little beauty, I knew it was perfect for a flip. It was in excellent condition and had a lovely shape - one of my key criterion for thrift store gems.
The first order of business was to sand the laminate coating. I found it easiest to remove the legs and the wooden drawer panel.

After sanding, I wiped everything down with a damp rag to remove every trace of dust.
Next, I gave the table two coats of paint.

Normally, you'd need to prime at this point, but I chose a latex wall paint we had left over from an interior paint project that included primer.

If you're going to use an expensive paint, you might as well get a perk or two, right?
I'm a huge fan of Behr paint, but this really put the icing on the cake. I got beautiful coverage in just two coats.
Next, I considered hardware. Because this piece was going into my daughter's room, I let her decide which handle to use to replace the dated one.

Then I learned that drawer handles just don't come in standard sizes.

We searched all through the bins at Hobby Lobby, but finding one that matched the size of the original proved impossible.

So we launched an alternative plan and chose a couple of butterfly knobs instead.

I gave them a coat of primer and white paint and set them aside to dry.
While the knobs were drying, I grabbed an old flower stencil, some craft paints, and a couple of stencil brushes, and added some character to the top of the table.

My daughter has a floral theme in her room, so I wanted this piece to carry that theme too.
For the centers of the flowers, I blended a little of the bright yellow paint with white to tone it down, then stenciled them in a random pattern across the top of the table, using all four sizes.

After they dried, I added pink, lavender, or white petals to each one.
Adding vines and leaves was my favorite part. I used a slanted craft brush and a light green craft paint to connect the flowers and add the extra pop of color and detail to pull it all together.
Finally, I sealed it with wipe on polycrylic, then reattached the legs, drawer facing, and new knobs.
My daughter is thrilled to finally have a bedside table in her beloved blue, and I'm pretty pleased that it only cost around $20.
