Using Chalk Paint to Transform Old Furniture

With all of the hype about chalk paint that's out there, I decided to try my hand at it. I had an old nightstand that I loved (great size, sturdy) but it was in poor shape. The chalk paint completely transformed this piece - so much that it looks like an entirely new nightstand. The best part? No sanding or priming! I'm definitely a fan.
First, choose a chalk paint. I used Annie Sloan because the quality and ingredients are second-to-none.

Next, prep your piece. Clean it off well. Baby wipes were work nicely. Also, remove any hardware, unless you are going to paint this.

After I prepped it, I got to work on the top. I wanted to paint the top gray and the rest of the piece white. I taped off the top so I could work here. I brushed on one coat of gray.

After that, I distressed the wood by painting another coat of gray. But, instead of letting it dry, I worked in white - by streaking in lines of white here and there.

Next, I very lightly worked in dark wax to create that distressed look.

After letting the top dry, I painted 3 coats of white on the rest of the piece.
Next, I waxed the entire piece with clear wax - by using small circular motions.

Last, I changed the drawer knob to something more modern to match the piece. Finishing touches make such a difference!
Check out the before and after side by side- what a difference!!
