Kid Room Organization

Some people find January a bit depressing. But I actually look forward to January. I look forward to the fresh start of a new year full of possibilities and experiences. I look forward to simplifying and getting my house cleaned up and organizing all.the.things. Toys are typically on the top of the list for organizing in my house this time of year.
First things first, you can't really talk about successful organizing without realizing that some purging needs to take place. I have found that the purging phase is best done in November or early December. BEFORE the major influx of stuff. I go through the kids closets, dressers and toy bins and donate reusable items and throw away all the broken toys and stained clothes. That way, there is some room for new toys and clothes before Christmas. In January, I will do a smaller purge if necessary. And then I can do a little reorganizing of their rooms.

Kid room organization in my house needs to focus on costumes, books and little trinkets (we store larger items in our guest room closet). I will start with my daughter's room. She has a pretty small room so I had to get creative once we switched out her crib for a twin size bed since the bed took up much more space than the crib.

I utilized the area behind the door by placing some hooks for storing costumes and bags. The mini vanity actually stores a lot of her little trinkets. I added that simple shelf for a bit more storage.
To the left of this is her closet.
She is almost 3 so most of her clothes can be fit in her dresser next to her bed and a few items hung in her closet. Since her clothes are short, I had a ton of room under her clothes in the closet that I could use for organizing books, tutus and other items. I moved a shelving unit that used to be in her room to inside her closet.

It is organized enough that we just leave the doors open all the time and it makes the room feel just a little bigger.

Moving to the wall on the left there are more hooks for capes and a display of books on the dresser.
There is a little more book storage above her bed.
Moving on to the boy's room.
Again, I utilized the closet space for more than just his clothes. I put some hooks on the back of his closet for costumes and then there is a large toy box for masks and more costumes and a small bin for cars and trucks. His closet is not very pretty, so these doors are usually kept closed:) All the rest of his clothes fit in the dresser next to his bed.

To the right of his closet, I hung this shelf with hooks (do you see a pattern here? Hooks, shelves, bins and baskets are my go-to).
His little trinkets are kept in his night stand, which I got for free on the side of the road!
He is only 6 so I will give you a peek at some of the things he hoards. Chocolate, rocks, gum and little crap that he finds in weird places. I will have to get a bin for this at some point for sure.
His book storage is in his bookcase on the other side of his room.
And on top of the dresser next to his bed.
And last but not least, he has a bin of legos under his bed.
Those are the details on my kid room organization. The kids know where all there things go and they actually help me keep everything organized. AND sometimes they can even find things all by themselves!
