Hi Jenell, you can find some really great tips here - https://makespace.com/blog/posts/how-to-organize-your-closet/ They're all budget-friendly and pretty easy to do.
Hi! When I updated my small closet, I took everything out first to see what I had in there. I found I had stuff in there that needed to be tossed, donated or stored elsewhere. I also found clothes I had forgotten I owned and things I would never wear. Once I pared it down to what I actually wanted to keep, I painted the walls, put in a new light and a Rubbermaid closet system. It was a time consuming project, but, made it easier to get ready each morning. I even put a hook on the door, to put my outfit for the next day. I spent weeks planning it, and it was worth all the effort. But, it's still the best closet I have ever had, even though it wasn't the largest! Good luck!

First, I purge anything I haven't worn in a year or I don't think I would buy today.
Second, flocked hangers will save a tremendous amount of space.
Third, either add a second rod or use cascading hanger method to utilize vertical space for multiples.
Fourth, this is how mine is "organized":
Workout clothes are hung together. I have 2 colors of hangers, black if pants have no pockets-pink if they do. Helps me choose for around the house or going out.
Office clothes are grouped next and they are the bulk of my closet. Arranged as follows:
Weight-sweaters, long sleeves, short sleeves, sleeveless (tanks) for tops. Jackets are hung at the end of tops where the dresses start. This makes it easy access for the items that I normally wear them with such as sleeveless dresses and tops.
Color-dark to light
I have tops on the bottom rack and pants on the top. This enables me to see them easier. A portion of the closet doesn't have a 2nd rod so I can hang dresses there.
I added baskets above the top rod on a shelf so that I can put my purses in there.
Could you add a vintage dresser somewhere inside? That way you could store all of the small things in something pretty and then hang your other things around/over it? It would help to keep the cluttery small things in a specific spot and out of sight.
Hi Jenell, hope these help you out,

1/-Remove the existing bar and reposition it to the highest level that you can still reach up comfortably with a hanger.
2/-Below this bar mount an additional second bar.
Doing this will make much better use of the vertical space in the closet. Generally the builder installed shelves at the top are too high to access anyway, and stuff tends to just fall forward and fall off.
3/-Below the second bar and close to the floor, mount a shelf wall-to wall across the closet width. This will accommodate items such as purses, shoe boxes etc. at a level easily reached. It will make use of this area in the closet while still allowing for easy vacuuming of the floor.
I've done not only my closet, but also most of my clients closets.... and here is my go to....
1) raise the shelf in the closet up so you can move the top closet rod up, and add a second rod for skirts and pants below. 2) you will need 2 pcs of 1x3" lumber the depth of the closet for each side of the closet, a second piece of closet rod along with the brackets to hold the ends of the rod.... if the rod is very long, get another bracket to fasten to the back of the closet in the middle to support the weight of the clothes 3) I also usually get an extra shelf for on top of the lower rod - I like the 8" to 12" wide melamine white shelving cut to the width of the whole closet. This will rest on top of your 1x3" side pieces... be careful before you add your rods, that you allow enough room for the hangers to fit over the rod (same for the top rod under the top shelf) When measuring where to put the lower rod, I usually put a pair of pants folded over a hanger and measure so it doesn't drag on the floor, mark where to put the rod, then repeat for the top rod to make sure your tops have enough room.
If you do have dresses, you can add a vertical board from the top shelf down to the floor the width of the area needed for dresses, use angle irons to fasten to the floor and upper shelf and add some 1x1" trim on the back wall next to your uprights that can be a single sheet of plywood or 2 12" wide boards measured to your height. Then fasten the rods to this vertical divider.
I usually add some kind of storage containers on the top shelf like fabric cubes or plastic crates.
If you need shoe storage, you can opt for plastic shoe boxes from the Dollar Tree with a picture of the shoe on the end. or you can add one of those fabric shoe hangers that hang on the rod in your dress area (I usually get them at a thrift shop like Goodwill or buy new at Walmart)
The second shelf is good for folded sweaters, or shoe storage.
Add a couple large hooks on the side, for hanging purses or scarves.
set up a box for donations, one for throw away and one for keep and go through every item - you need to completely empty your closet and then hand shirts in an area together, skirts or dresses, slacks, etc. you can buy organizers for your closet and also hooks for hanging purses, belts, etc. shoe racks can be purchased for over the back of the door or those that sit on the floor.
Wow, nice sized closet! The best way is to clean everything out, sort through what you’re keeping, then analyze the types of storage you need based on what you have. Shop or DIY solutions then.
