Closet revamp, help needed

Ricky Kersey
by Ricky Kersey
Hello, I am not the most handy, but a smart and very physically able guy. I have entirely too many clothes and about 40 pairs of shoes. My closet is incredibly inefficient. I know I could go for more storage - be it shelves, drawers, whatever. Please help! Any advice on how to turn this into a better space (maybe without the dresser) or anything would be great!

Since you don't use the shelves on the top - remove them and buy new rods that you can double up at least on one side of the closet. Hang it right at the ceiling level and measure the next row to be down far enough to hang you shirts on both rows. That will give you two rows of shirts at least on one side of the closet and your buy shelves for the other side for your shoes, etc. The other thing that you could benefit from is organizing your shirts according to color - it makes it so easy to find the right shirt! Good luck!

Thank you! Only reason I am not using the top shelves is because they barely fit a shoe box. But I think moving the rods up and hanging everything on one side is a great idea. Thanks

I'd first suggest going through your closet and giving away a few things you've not worn in over a year. Then second, I'd take all the hangers, hang them backwards on the bars. When you wear something and re-hang it, put it facing the correct direction. Anything you've not moved in 6 months is also to be donated. Face your shoes toes pointing out and when you wear them, change them to toes pointing in. Same deal, 6 months later, get rid of the ones you've not worn in 6 months. Let's face it, there's only so many days in the week, and no one needs that much stuff, plus you get a tax write off and there are so many that need clothing and shoes.

Getting rid of shoes is the hardest part! I would be what they call a "sneaker head"

You make think my suggestion is off the mark, but since you say you have entirely too many clothes, please get a copy of The Magic of Tidying up. It's only about $15 and will completely change your thinking about organizing. It is very easy reading. I am very organized (so say my friends) and my closet was already organized by color and style. After reading this book, I got rid of over 22 large trash bags of clothes, shoes, and accessories. Before you try to organize too much stuff--an exercise in frustration--please read this book.

I agree. Once you begin to looking at what you have differently, you may discover you really don't need it all. Organized clutter is still clutter and it takes up space that something more enriching to your life could use, even energetically speaking.

MarketingMom gave you a great answer........Remove the wire shelves and install 2 sets of rods on one side. I think 84 and 36 inches are the heights for hanging them. On the opposite wall, install standards for adjustable shelving, which can be used for all your shoes, and also for baskets to hold other items, such as your football, etc. With the proper arrangement, you could also hang longer items, such as winter top coats, rain coats, etc. You will be able to leave the dresser where it is, and use baskets on top to store additional items. You will be amazed at how much your new configuration helps, and all the extra space you now seem to have gained. Good Luck.....

I organize my clothes by color. It's amazing how the same closet looks more organized.

Give half of everything to the Homeless, they will be grateful and your problem will be solved.

but think of all the people who could use them! I clean my closets twice a year, if it's not touched my person in 6 months, I'm honestly not going to wear it again. And if you look, you've probably got several similar shirts and similar pants. Take inventory of the things you wear most often, and the clothes and shoes that you feel happy wearing. I guarantee you'll be happy once you've purged?

You are drowning in clutter. I had the same problem. Decide what you love, what brings you joy when you wear it. Start with neutral colors & pack others away for time being. Most neutrals work together so start from there. I decided for me anyway, that I really only needed 7 of each in pants and shirts. 4 Jackets. 2 shoes I didn't count work out or jeans, t shirts. Causal shoes. I get a lot of mileage from grey sweats, blue jeans, causal black pants. Just change t shirts. Fav outfit? White T, grey swears, black windbreaker. I can go almost anywhere in that outfit. My key was zooming in on basic colors.
  • Invest in Joy Mangano hangers. Sold at Bed, Bath & Beyond as well as HSN. It will make all your hanging items uniform and you can get more items in less space. That along with all previous suggestions and you should be good to go! Mind you this comes from a middle aged woman in a 2 bed, 2 bath with loft house with 4 closets filled ALL with my clothes, shoes (down to 200 pair), handbags, hats, (those take up a lot of space, scarves, hat scarves, belts and other accessories. You can do it and the end result will make you really happy!

My closet looks almost identical to yours. Since you have a LOT of shirts, do what others have suggested and definitely buy a second rod on which to hang your shirts. If you hang T-shirts, forget that and store them vertically** in dresser drawers. Re ** if you go to Google, you will see an explanation of that. Can you store your shoes on the top rack or under the bed. Go to reuse stores and if you see drawers (minus the dresser part), buy a few, mount casters underneath then they will roll out easily from under the bed. I'd also suggest paring down your clothes. Good luck!

I would take the wire shelving out and get the shelf brackets that hold a pole and above the pole is where you can put a 1x12 cut to the size of closet. This will give you a place for shoes by putting two rows of hanging clothes on each side. I would also use a pipe ( they can be cut to fit from the hardware store)to hang things on, they are stronger. This would allow you four rows of clothes or leave one side for longer things.
