We have a queen sized bed in our home that has a headboard that is also a bookshelf. It is maple has a top shelf and sliding doors to lean on while reading. Books are stored here. The doors slant. You could probably get a bookcase and remove bottom shelves for the width of your bed and use the top shelves for storage. But I would secure this to the wall and also make sure that any stored items could not fall on the sleeper(s)

Anything can be a headboard. You can use a narrow console with sliding doors, add tall legs so it's above your mattress. Creates a type of bookcase headboard like used in the 50s.

Hello I have tiny bedrooms and lack of closets too, but resorted to using a new bed frame that has that allows for 14 inches of storage underneath it. It’s made my life very much easier, not using the wonky bed risers either. Its an alternative you might wish to think about.

Shelves with bins. Utilize under the bed storage too.

We have the bed frame as Vimarhonor posted. Look on Amazon. Just FYI, the frames come in different heights. You might want to choose the height based on the bedskirt options available rather than buying the highest one for more storage - unless you can sew.
