Look up! If you examine the walls/ceiling and consider what needs to be stored you'll surely see areas where shelving, hooks and other helpful things can go.

For my disabled clients I like to use underbed storage - this can be old drawers with some mini wheels added to the bottom, and a handle on front, and a cloth cover stapled at the back to drape over the top.

Then you can also raise the bed and put crates underneath with the opening pointed out to the room, and use the fabric cubes from Ikea or Dollar Tree to store items in.

Also improve closet storage by adding a second rod to hang pants and skirts below. Use the top shelf with plastic cubes to store out-of-season clothes.

I also use a large bookcase in my spare room to store bedding, linens etc. I have also put these in clients small bedrooms, using the tall narrow ones called towers to tuck into a corner.

You can even get a storage cube to use as a bedside table to store items in, and if there is enough room a long storage cube at the end of the bed is perfect for extra covers.

I recently got a new bed frame. It was less then $65 and the frame is 14 inches above the floor. That allows for a lot more storage. And since no box spring is needed the height of the bed itself is not changed.

Go vertical. Bookcases that run all the way to the ceiling will add more storage.

How big is the closet? Could any furniture or other items go in there? Check out some the storage organizes you can buy (saw one for under $20 at Goodwill).

Is there anything in the bedroom that could go in another room?

Also have you played with rearranging the furniture? That alone can make a huge difference.

  • Start by removing items you no longer need or want then evaluate what you are keeping. That will help you determine the type of storage you’ll need. Using your walls, going vertical makes a big difference.

Marilyn: the first thing to do is DECLUTTER! If you do not wear or use something -- get rid of it! Someone will appreciate your generosity! You can always take photos of your treasures before you give them away. The memories will stay for always.

Purge them add under bed storage and wall shelves with bins or boxes. Flicked hangers to utilize closet space. If you haven’t needed it in a year, donate it.

  • Hi Marilyn - This is one of my favorite articles on cleaning, organizing and decluttering. It really breaks down the steps of the process, and even includes an interview with TV show Hoarders star Matt Paxton. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

Purge as much as possible! Less stuff = less to store!
