How do I organize a room for my 11 year old boy?

be ruthless --- clean out the clutter, broken toys, old toys that he no longer uses -- if in good condition take to the good will, if broken, toss.

If there are sentimental pieces, put up a shelf for display; Get boxes/bins and put like toys together -- etc. and set rules --- if he leaves them laying around, under the bed, jammed in the back of the closet -- they then belong to YOU!

you can take away for a while, and if he keeps it neat, return to him; if not, and he continues to make a mess, he'll end up with NO toys. YOUR HOUSE, YOUR RULES --

Hi Shi. You can use bookshelves with boxes and bins for storage. Depending on your son's age, allow him to decorate the boxes (he'll be more inclined to use them) Underbed storage containers work well too. Just be sure to attach the shelves to the wall for safety.

Get inexpensive metal storage shelves and put bins on at least one shelf. I always had a zip lock bag in every game box , all small pieces, cards go in them !!! I also would take away items left on the floor and not put away. I kept a laundry basket in my room , to keep confiscate items for a week. It seemed to work well. It is important to have their room set up , to make it easy for them to have a place to put things away. It is supposed to take 21 days to make a habit of something , make a set time for your child to clean up...such as before dinner, after dinner , before bath time...work around your schedule, but be consistent for at least a month. In positive re enforcement...compliment the child for doing a good job, surprise them once in a while with something small, let them stay up an extra half hour , take them for ice cream , or out of the blue movie night at home with popcorn...make sure you tell them it's because they are doing a good job !!!

Rotate the toys in and out of the room: In boxes or large plastic containers pack away the games, puzzles, toys and even books that haven’t recently been played with. Place / store the boxes out of sight in the attic, basement, etc. Then, in 4 months, pack up the toys that remain in the room and bring out the boxes of stored toys. Let your child help with both the packing and unpacking. Mark the calendar with the next unpacking date and make a big deal out of this date. My daughter (at age 10) told me it was like having 3 extra birthdays every year as we were unpacking the boxes and rotating the items back into her room. If she had a favorite toys or books she could keep them in her room. This accomplished several things: 1)Her room had less clutter and was easier for her to maintain; 2)She learned how to organize and prioritize; and 3) We loved working together as a team and had fun doing it.
