How to build shelving unit to master closet

Sharon
by Sharon
I would like to build a shelving unit in master closet but have no idea where to start. I would like 4 open shelves and 3 or 4 drawers on the unit. I would like to incorporate it, if possible, with current rods and shelves. I have priced similar unit for about $400 buy would like to try it as a diy project.
This is similar to what I want for my closet

First thing if you are going to do this yourself is to take real good measurements, and then graph it out on graph paper what you can fit in the space. You can look up online on Lowe's, Home Depot etc. to see the units available and the measurements of each piece. This way you can mix and match till you come up with something you like.

Otherwise if this seems to daunting, go to the Container Store and have a closet designer come in to help you plan... https://www.containerstore.com/s/closet/1

I did a quick fix job myself which cost about NZ$50

I bought 2 open cube type book shelves, One had 3 open spaces and the other was a slimline taller one with about 6 open shelves. Both are the type that you can buy plastic or fabric boxes in to hold clothes or other stuff. I turned the smaller book shelf on its side. Then I placed the slimeline one, on top, standing upright. These were both placed in the centre of the closet the same way that your pic shows. Then I bought enough dowling to cut into 4 pieces. I also bought plastic brackets that the doweling can fit into. I attached these brackets on the sides of the upright unit 2 near the top of the unit and 2 in the middle. I then attached brackets on the closet side walls directly opposite and level with the

brackets on the upright shelving unit. The dowel was cut to size to fit in between the cabinet sides and the walls, looking the same as your pic. Works a treat, looks great and gives me heaps of storage space. I recommend securing the upright unit to the back wall of the closet for stability
