I tried this awhile back. It was challenging, but I love the results. Be brutal when cleaning out closets. For clothes, people wear about 20% of what they own. If you don't love it or wear it, get rid of it-trash it or donate it. I tried this

Admittedly I didn't get down to 40 hangers. I think I made it down to 60 from an estimated 120+ hangers before I started.

    • 40 hangers? Never gonna happen. I have formal business attire, business casual, weekend wear for summer and winter, chore clothes, some items I wear for camping, cocktail dresses in both summer and winter styles, proper formal wear for those occasions that require it. Coat closet alone is easily 40 items. Add in my hats, which now must top 100, plus scarves, belts, shoes, handbags, hat embellishments, etc. My flip flop collection is legendary according to my friends that keep adding to it. I purge my closets every year and donate to the local women's shelter as they really really need it.

People waste a great deal of closet by hanging sweaters, which quickly stretch out of shape. Several pair of slacks can be hung on wooden hangers which better support the weight. Vests and blouses may be hung together, as can skirts, or suit jackets and blouses.

As Bethany indicated, you probably wear less than half of what you own, so ruthlessly purge your closet.

Unless your shoes and boots are very expensive and classicly styled, there's little reason to save them over many years, and waste valuable closet space.

  • Set aside one day to work on this project. Try on each piece of clothing. If you don't "love" it, then donate it. I guarantee at the end of a few hours, you will have a huge donation pile. As you put things back in the closet, organize in sections. If you have room, roll t-shirts and sweaters to create more closet space. Use boxes, bins or baskets for the rolled items. Do the same with dresser drawers. You will amaze yourself. The hardest part is making the time to do the task!
