They show a night stand next to the bed but I would just make or buy a simple floating shelf with one drawer and mount it on the wall so as not to have to move a night stand to make that closest drawer useable.

Myself, I went with raising my bed on risers and used two layers of underbed boxes and vacuum bags to store seasonal items and items that don't wrinkle. That left me with plenty of storage room underneath and room for two nightstands in my small bedroom.
I neglected to say our bed room is more contempoary in design style. But, I see some wo der ideas here that could be adapted to our style. We're currently using the bed riser and plastic storage box route. Not very aesthetically pleasing and much wasted space due to the dimensions of the boxes.
Makes sense. I have a similar situation with an oak bedroom set that I want updated but don't want to get rid of. Can you use just the drawer portion of those plans? Also there are low profile plastic containers with wheels on one end and handle on other end that will fit under a bed.
