One of my favorite cheap closet organization tips is to use soda can tabs to make room for other items or more clothes. Take a hanger and put the soda can tab through one of the tab holes. Take other hanger and hang it on the second tab hole and so on. I usually have 4 to 6 garments hanging in a row. It is so cheap and helps make room to organize.

Plastic tubs work well as they seal in the contents and you can label them outside the tub. Plus you can move them around and buy different sizes.

Dollar Tree has numerous baskets, small crates, cloth square and rectangular container and many other containers that will inspire organization for your closet. Check them out.

My closet is one of my most favorite rooms in my house!! It is 8'x5' and has tall ceilings and I make the most of the space. I installed 2- 6' long plastic coated shelves on the long wall (shirts on top/pants on bottom) and have the regular height shelf for longer items on the short wall. I used a shower curtain rod to hang above the shelf on the short end of my closet to hang purses. I put each purse on a coat hanger either hanging by the purse handles or using clothes pins. I have LOTS of shoes and keeping each pair in it's box is not space saving. So, I use heavy duty card board boxes---usually the ones that eggs are shipped in, lay them sideways and stack 2 high (they have a middle divider which provides support), then fill with shoes. And on top of the egg boxes I have another large box without a top about 10" tall where I place all of my sandals/ flip-flops (standing up in box). Card board boxes are free and you can either paint them or cover with contact paper to make look pretty.

it depends a bit on what your closet is full of - one person mentioned shoes and a good way to store them...and how big the closet is.

ours is inadequate, so we each have a dresser in the bedroom for casual clothes, and the closet is 'only' for things that need hanging

ours has one section where two rods are hung one over the other, and then another section where one is hung high, so my dresses and skirts can hang freely.

our few belts and ties are hung on the 'short' wall, and winter gear is stowed in tubs...and we each have a 3-drawer end table for odds and ends (mine has stockings and the rest of my socks, his has...whatever he has in them.

I have all my jewelry hung in the hallway in picture frames that keep it looking 'intentional'

my dress shoes (love them, rarely wear them) are actually on display in the guest room, in the top part of a hutch that I pulled off the sidewalk - this works, because they're all colorful and kinda whimsical.

I've found places like Habitat's ReStore to be great resouces for baskets, wire shelving, and oddly shaped storage pieces.
