I need to build storage around my bed as we have a tiny room. Help!

Question

Small room with very little space for storage. I was thinking of buying extra deep bookcases and screwing them to the wall, then placing a longer bookcase on top to give a built in cupboard look. I could then cover with material or make plywood doors for each shelf. What do you think? I need the easiest and cheapest option!

Why not try making  something that would raise your bed and make drawers underneath

sadly I have a wrought iron sleigh bed, which I love, so I think that would be nigh on impossible! Also, there is a lack of floor space so it would mean I wouldn't be able to pull out any drawers underneath more than 40-50 cm. It really is that small a room!

What about making a shelf that goes around the perimeter of the room about 15-20 inches below the ceiling and putting square basketsor bins to store things. I did something similar to this in my sons room to hold his sports memorabilia.

But then I would find it really hard to access things. I'm only short. I need storage to counteract not having closets. really, somewhere to store mine and my husbands clothes!

Extra deep bookcases usually don't work well....you end up over filling and you can't access your things.....why not place 2 smaller bookcases back to back and put them on rollers?

Ana...I have been following the 'Tiny House Blog' for a number of years and have seen some decent ideas there. http://tinyhouseblog.com/tiny-house/18-brilliant-storage-ideas-for-tiny-homes/ The above article is just one of a few that have surfaced. People who transition into smaller homes often will purge a lot of their stuff. So the obvious issue is Less stuff = less storage space. I am in the process of building a small 200 sq foot cabin on our property in Northern New Mexico. That entire cabin is about 1/3 the size of our master suite. when we visit there we only bring a few items so the 'space' issue is not much of a concern. Out longer term plans are to relocate there full time which will require and drastic mind shift in material possessions. While having your clothing in the bedroom may be ideal...it may also not be practical based on your size constraints, is there a nearby room that can be used?

I actually did my bedroom with the selves the way you are discribing and it looked great, just make sure the selving units line up well to the one on top so it doesnt look like it is just thrown together. I mod podged fabric to the inside of the shelves (all of them) to give it a unified look. Good luck

Oh, I forgot to say, if you can't find a shelving unit to line up properly you could use just a plank on top and add decorative trim to the front.

@Ana Fawdry hi, I wanted to pop in to say the units should be fastened to each other and the wall SECURELY. I'm sure even in the UK you get earthquakes. Do not put anything heavy enough or with sharp corners on the higher parts that might hurt you if they fell. Oh, also the horizontal unit should not be of pressed wood (MDF here in USA) as it will very quickly start to sag dangerously and even come apart. 
That said a tiny bedroom can be cosy and efficient. My bedroom is so tiny I can only fit a twin (single) size bed, a child's desk and a 15' plant stand with my tiny portable TV. My bed is a 'Captain's Bed' with 10 drawers underneath. I do have a 5' closet, I hung one rod further back than it was and added another in front of it so doubled hanging room. I also store out of season clothes in an adjacent bedroom so that is definitely cheating! Yee haa! (<----- cowboy cheer)
