First, get rid of everything you do not wear or use. Be honest with yourself and weed out all of the things you do not use regularly. Then, group similar items together...shirts/pants/jackets/bags/belts/shoes/etc./ But bins and baskets for items that can fit on a shelf or on the floor. Use clear bins for shoes to keep them clean and easy to find. Use specialty hangers for things like belts, scarves, etc. Always put things back in their designated area for best results.

Sometimes the only way to improve things is to take everything out, shelves, rods, etc... and start over.. How much long hanging storage (dresses, etc) do you really need? Are you hanging things that can be folded and stacked? can you put in two layers of hanging, for shirts, blouses, slacks, etc. Can you move coats or jackets to an entry closet or store seasonal things higher on a shelf out of the way when not in use. Can you put drawers under your bed for seasonal stuff, or shoes? can you add another shelf if you start from scratch...

Look for organizers that will help you use the space better... I stacked 2 of these in one end of my closet.. the everyday use stuff, like undies, PJ's, socks bras, etc are in the center area. Seasonal stuff like sweat shirts, long sleeve t's, heavy socks, etc move up or down according to wearing now or later in the year. The bins on top hold gloves, scarves, handbags, etc, (the bear is one my husband gave me for our 1st anniversary, 45 years ago, he stays up on top away from kids, dogs, and dust) There was just enough room at the end to hang 2 vertical shoe bags (the rod goes between the unit and the wall.

Need to make a plan... get some graph paper and start drawing out the space... photo copy the basic drawing (so you don't have to keep drawing it from scratch each time) Decide how big you need each feature to be, 36 in tall X 5 ft wide for shirt hanging, etc. use the graph paper and draw it then cut it out.. arrange it on the basic drawing and photo copy... try a new arrangement and photo copy... that way you can compare plans side by side.... until you settle on one that will fit your needs.

AND... when you put things back...if you have not worn it in 2 years... it is out, unless it is something unique, like a mink jacket. I have a rule... one in... one out.... new pair of shoes.... and old one goes out...
