I moved (about three miles) into a house a fraction of the size of the rent house we were in before for 14 years. The living room is the size of my old bedroom! No more walk in closets or room for most of the furniture I had in the old one (queen sized bed, three bookcases, full sized dresser and chest of drawers, large computer desk, small desk, antique settee, an old trunk, cedar chest and two night stands and still had room. Now I can fit the bed, one nightstand, the dresser, chest of drawers and cedar chest and almost everything touches. Just enough room to open dresser drawers before hitting the end of the bed. I have put up an extra shelf in the closet and use under the bed boxes and the vacuum bags for clothes that are out of season that I put under the bed also. I am lucky that the spare bedroom in the basement has a long cedar closet, it takes my wool coats and out of season outer clothes. I put my bed on risers so that I could double stack under the bed boxes with clothes that I would normally hang but don't wrinkle and blue jeans and other pants that really don't need to hang. If you have extra rooms in the basement, you can get one of those framed and covered clothes closets you put together and keep the clothes that you don't normally wear a lot. You can keep shoes in the bottom. They do work well and have like a canvas cover that zips closed and clothes stay clean.

We recently bought a particle wood shelving unit 4'x6' x12 inches deep for 4$ at Habitat 4 Humanity and built it into one side of closet our cabin closet and placed a dowel style rod one one side to the wall for hanging. It not only looks amazing, it is functional, stores folded items, blankets, baskets and shoes very nicely. And was very cheap to do.

This is a great idea, Susan! I know it will free up a lot of space.

Add loop to hangers and double up.

Double your available hanging space by adding an extender rod. Amazon has some for solid prices
