I once had a grey headboard. The walls are pollen grain. I made curtains from twin size sheets-yellow gray and white chevron pattern. A light gray lampshade. I added bling and a flower. It has an acrylic 4 balls lamp base. My furniture is black with glass and bling knobs. I upgraded to a king size headboard for comfort and it’s black. What do I need to change in here. Never had a black headboard before.

    Hello Wilma,

All you need to do is add a few small item that are black, such as a Book - a Vase - A Cushion a Rug? just add them one at a time, till you feel it is right!

Have fun. The other alternative is to make your Headboard blend in with your room, by adding to it or softening it in some way...............

    Hey Wilma,

Love that you made curtains from sheets...I think the style of the curtains may not go with the style of the headboard though...possible remove the swags and add a black curtain rod with nice finials. The black rod would tie in the black of the headboard. Just a thought!

  • I agree about curtains not going so well with headboard and furniture. I love the lamp shade though. I would jump off of that for both curtains and duvet cover/throw pillows for the bed. For curtains, I would use a more modern styled black rod with black curtain rings with hooks to hold the curtain. For the curtains and duvet I would use a grey linen similar to the lamp shade. On the top of the curtains I would DIY trim the top with the crystal bling and white flowers you have on the lamp shade. I would make curtain tie backs from the bling trim and flowers too. The bed duvet would need to be practical and washable, so just grey linen, but throw pillows on the bed can bring in white flowers and crystal bling. The dark black furniture and grey curtains and duvet would darken up the room some, but you could offset that with crisp white linens and sheers under the curtains, and by rethinking the accessories to bring in more white.

I would add a black sheet to the valance of the curtains and (optional) some black down each side of the curtain. You seem to have quite a bit of black already with your dresser and night stand. You don’t want too much black or it will be too dark. Since your nightstand has mirror maybe add some mirror strips to the front of the dresser as well. Maybe you could find a strip of black diamonds to add to the bottom of the gems on the lamp. If you want more yellow do some black, yellow and some of that silver sequined pillows on the bed. And you could even change some of the chevron stripes in the curtains to black. Just about a foot apart. You could also add a grey dust ruffle to the bed or yellow and opposite with the sheets to coordinate. Hope that helps and is what you are looking for.

The headboard and mirrored side tables have a deco feel to me. Take down the swag. Build a cornice and upholster in black with nailhead trim to match the headboard and add black tiebacks. This would tie the curtains in. There is a lot of black in the room, but the curtains need to be brought in. I would lighten the back of the black bookcase to brighten the room and make the bookcase less "heavy". Mirror in some of the openings to reflect some light, or maybe paint the back.

The things that I think are important are to remove the swag and do the cornice to match the headboard which I love. The curtains are super and with a little bit of bling will be even better. The suggestion to back the bookcase shelves with yellow or some other light color would help. Can't wait to see the finished product - you have good taste.

Define what you like...headboard and dresser all clean lines and deco. Flowers and swags sort of romantic...Diagonal curtains too busy for headboard and not a great match. I would opt for black and white then maybe warm it up with a throw on bed and accent pillows in a warm color. Maybe clear knobs on dresser to match lamp. Change shade to black or white or a combo and paper or mirror as someone else suggested behind bookcase/shelf.

I would paint the wall a lighter color as well a cream perhaps...then the black would really standout.
