How do you redecorate on a non existtent budget?

Trying to make a nicer master bedroom and I can't even make up my mind what collors I really want. I was a lack grey & yellow combo, also I like chocolate brown w/tan. I wouldlike a headboard that I can make on a fealbuget friendly bases. Don' forget the accessories too.

My favorite subject....If it's free it's for me....OK, go on craigslist and look under free. People give away all kinds of stuff. Get your hands on a door - paint it and use it as a headboard. Old metal dodads make good headboard or wall decor. If you can get an old bedspread or piece of fabric you love cut two or three pieces of board use some old foam and cover them with the fabric. Hang them on the wall above your bed. Go to Lowes, Home Depot and look at the Oops paints. They are usually right near the paint desk. If you don't see colors you like don't be afraid to mix two or three colors together just be sure they are the same finish, for example don't mix semi-gloss with flat. Post an ad on Craigslist under items wanted, don't be afraid to ask. One mans trash...........Also, visit your local thrift stores. I find great stuff at Unique. A word of caution regarding craigslist - don't go inside anyones house alone. Just saying.

Habitat ReStore outlets are a really good deal, too. They are basically thrift stores that also sell used tools, building materials, etc. They often have really cheap leftover paint from folks who had to buy a gallon but only needed a small amount, or something like that. You can't be picky about the color, though. It's pretty much luck of the draw. Another site similar to Craigslist is FreeCycle. Lots of people giving away stuff. That one's nice because you can sign up for email alerts so you see stuff when it is posted rather than whenever you happen to log on, like Craigslist. Great talk Steve - I had forgotten about FreeCycle. I don't have a Habitat ReStore close to me - the one about an hour away doesn't have much other than furniture and lighting.

rediscover other items in your home, group them by colors, shapes etc then redistribute in the master. Lowes and home depot always have a "oops paint" where they sell mis colored or returned paint cheap cheap cheap!! like $5 a gallon!! and 2.50 a quart! I always have white primer on hand to lighten if the oops paint is too dark...or even will do the bottom of the room in the dark and the top lighter ( mixed with the white), I find that Monday morning is the best day to find the oops paint...right after people return it from the weekend! AND don't be afraid to "trash dive" find out when "trash bulk day" is in your neighborhood and get out there!! People throw out all kinds of great household items...you just have to have a little imagination and elbow grease to fix it, paint it or repurpose it!! Old clothers can be used as great fabric, sandpaper can work wonders and paint is like mulch...its a cheap and easy beautification tool!! I am a Real estate agent ( by trade) and always tell sellers that mulch and paint can make a HUGE difference!!! For walls, you can frame anything to make a sttatement, even scrapbook paper!! Just use your imagination and start with your FAVORITE object in your master and build from there! the sky is the limit!!! Good luck and post pictures when you are done!!!

I like the idea you had, especially about the lights. I may be on a very tight budget and have several "wish" lists going, but this one is the first for my bedroom. I am fortunate in the respect that I have a neighbor who is very handy in working with all sorts of tools...He just redid his kitchen using one of the kits from Lowes, but that is way down on my list. I appreciate all you shared Yamini and only wish we had more antique/thrift shops here in York!

Close your eyes and imagine a "virtual world"....Paint and some elbow grease can go a long long way. And as others have pointed out UPcycle some stuff. I have seen some very awesome headboards made out of old door + such. My Log bed was basically free...the timbers were harvested from a friends property...sweat equity and a few 2x 4 and aluminum angle iron complete the rest.

Terri, Craiglist is your thrift and Flea market. if you like anything and have a good feeling about it buy it and negotiate a price so the seller ships it to you as well. ebay is a great place to start as well. Check out Freecycle.com too.

Will do after i get back from vacation! Going to Arizona and hopefully the Grand Canyon. I know Arizona has beautiful sunsets, so hoping to get some pictures etc to put up for wall decor too. I appreciate your willing ness to help me so much!

Terri J...The Grand Canyon area is indeed a Photographers dream world. In addition to the famous Grand Canyon, if your trip allows you should also check out Zion NP, Bryce canyon, NP and Monument Valley. The grand canyon is great.... but crowded...the other parks can offer a bit more solitude...and the views just as impressive if not more so. We road tripped through there in May of 2010. Here are some teaser pics.

I used to live in Fla and there is something about seeing the Spanish moss on trees that really does something emotionally for me. I took lots of pictures of those too. I love the pictures you took and think that if I can take some 1/2 as nice, then I will have a wall dedicated to photos in my office one day - yard sale picture frames, here I come!

The sun is out right now here, but it's still bittter cold, and I have cabin fever like thre is no tomorrow. I wish I could be gone longer than just 8 days in Arizona, bt it beats not going at all. Where I live, there really isn't much to do, and being the month right after Christmas...I am paying off Christmaas bills. I have to find other hobbies - like knitting, until I get the money to work on the house again. Then come summertime, I garden (or attempt to).. Don ya'lall have snow yet? We had our first in October and now a little storm last weekend. Yuck! Anyway, I keep staring at thie pctures you sent - can't wait to get out of here.
