I'M AFRAID i WOULD BE INCLINED TO LOWER THE BED AND OR PUT COUCH CUSHIONS OR BEAD BAGS AT THE SIDE WHERE THE CHILD MIGHT FALL.( after all if you put up a rail if they climb or fall it will be higher the drop.
We used a mesh safety rail for our toddler. It was inexpensive and I purchased it at Kmart or Walmart.
Hello Debbie, If you want to DIY a safety rail, you could use PVC to construct it. PVC also offers corner pieces. You would have to draw up a rough sketch of how big you want it. A sales clerk at any home improvement store would be able to tell you exactly what you would need. Hope this helps you.
until you get the rail made, you could use two chairs with the backs to the bed on each side. The safety rail would depend on what type of bed if it is wooden, plastic, metal, etc. You could also use furniture on each side like small side dressers or end tables. They do not have to be the full length of the bed, just top 1/4 or so near the head.
I would lower the bed a little. Get some firm pieces of foam and put under the sheet on both sides to give them a sense of security.

When he gets a bit older and don't really need the sides, you can use foam pool noodles as above.
