I'd hang a wall tapestry completely covering the largest wall, amazon and wayfair have thousands at a reasonable price. Then use bright poster art for the remaining walls and knick knacks throughout. Wall mirror ensembles also can be used. Light or bright color bedding and sheers for the windows.

Have you asked your landlord for permission to paint? Like maybe a whitewash or gray wash?

If nothing else, you could apply contact paper (self adhesive). It comes in nice thick opaque vynil these days and many nice patterns.

Lastly you might be able to put up bead board, trying to use small tack nails along same place as the paneling nails.

I would hate dark paneling in my bedroom too! Awful!

Ask the Landlord if you can! Are you planning on this being a long time rental? If not, don't bother unless it really gets you down.

Refinishing wood to lighten the color is a VERY laborious process, involving sanding the eniter surface multiple time, involving noxious chemicals. Not recommended for a diy project.

I bet it is. I hate dark paneling. Have you asked your landlord for permission to paint?
