Matching colors for drapes and bedskirt?

I have a pattern quilt with an antique white background with multiple shades of blue and deep yellow in the print. Should I match the color of the window treatment with the bedskirt? If so navy or antique white? The walls are deep yellow tone. One person told me to use navy bedskirt and a lighter blue window treatment. What's your opinion?

I'm doing same thing now but I have patterened skirt and solid comforter. I'm making my curtains and doing them in three colors, one is the bed skirt. But the othe teo are not the comforter. We will see how it looks. I always just lay whatever up to see how it looks before I make a decision. Hood luck. Please post when you have it completed.

For the summer, white would be nice and maybe for a change in the winter, blue. An eyelet dust ruffle would look nice.

I like the blue pillow color for skirt & windows.

Take into account the size of your room. If the room is large and spacious then the dark blue for curtains would be OK. If the room is a bit small then I would avoid a dark curtain colour as it will be quite dominant in the room and make the room feel smaller. Also depends whether you want the bed linen to be the dominant feature in the room or the curtains.

      Sounds good...definitely makes sense.

I think if you add navy blue drapes the room will appear very dark. I'd go with the mustard color of the walls, but a shade or two lighter. The drapes do not have to match your comforter. I'd go with a fabric that resembles silk for an added lux look. Also, I would stick with one color on the drapes without any patterns, so the space doesn't seem busy.

@Kathy Kathy, in my opinion it does not. You don't want it to be matchy matchy. Think of decor as if you were dressing a person, if someone is wearing head to to one color it might look a little boring and flat, if you add different shades and colors it adds dimension to the outfit and lets the eye travel and be interested. The same applies to your decor. Plus, you should stick with pieces that you like. You have to feel comfortable in your room.
  • I would use drapes as side panel if you do not have to draw them for privacy. I would use the deep yellow in the quilt with a band of navy all the way down the edge of the side that faces into the window. I would cup pleat the top with navy cording underneath the pleats all the way cross. This would be very smart and not just your average window treatment.

I didn't understand what you meant about cup pleating the top?

For the drapes make sure the value is shades away from the wall color. Think about it as a black and white picture. (Or take a picture and change it to black and white in iphoto) If the walls and drapes would both come out the same color of grey, it's not good.
  • this would also give you a nice cohesive look. When you use a shade of the color of the wall for the window treatment, it makes the room look larger. This will be very pretty.

I like your idea very much, and especially like the idea of the navy bed skirt. Since there are other blues in your quilt, how about picking out one in a 63" length, and adding the navy from the skirt onto the bottom of the drape? I have a small room that is off white and the complete navy denim drapes look good on it, my suggestion is based on some of the comments above.

Did you mean pick out one of the lighter shades of blue from the quilt and purchase a 63" curtain then buy another navy bedskirt and add it to the curtain?
  • if you would google pleated drapes and search for cup pleated. If you can't find cup pleated let me know what kinds you found. It might be called something in different parts of the country.

There are many different types of pleats that can be made, including goblet pleats, box pleats, French pleats and pinched pleats
  • It is the goblet pleats. (they are also called cup pleats in some area) I know your room is going to turn out amazing.

I like the idea of the navy skirt, but if the room is not very large, for the curtain I would use the calico colour of one of the cushions (lined in block out if used totally to keep out light) as not to make the room appear too closed in and small.

I would go with the blue in your quilt because there is enough yellows in your room best place for curtains are at JC Penny's on line or in store they are well worth their money. Any curtain that you like would go perfect with your bed.

Yes, almost. Since someone who was actually in your house thought the navy drapes would be too dark, I suggest sewing the bottom panel of navy onto a lighter blue drape. You see this constantly on television, because they hang the curtains almost to the ceiling, and then fill in the bottom with a contrasting color.

All these idea's are great. My suggestion...consider a double curtain hanger, and put navy shears with a valance made from the yellow bedskirt over top. Use a navy bedskirt and the room should pop.
