Master Bedroom

I need some advice on décor for my master bedroom. I'm wanting to decorate in French country but I'm having problems finding things appropriate for it in my budget. My colors are deep red, black, and white. The picture shows the bedding I'm getting my inspiration from. Any suggestions?

one great thing about FC is that it's not matchy matchy. Use an old door to make a bed side table or use a flea market tea cart. Find clearance fabric for recovering lamp shades. Outdoor garden items could be interesting. Maybe an outdoor bench at the end of the bed? Layer your pillows too, you don't want them to match either. Hope that helps. Oh, we have family in Navasota - Small world.

@Cindy Richter Thanks for the great suggestions! We just moved here a couple of years ago. We're actually out in the country. Love it here!

    I like it!

@Sherrie Thanks, but that's as far as it goes the rest of the room is bare!

LOVE your warm and cozy colors and esp. the tiny checks. Can you "shop your house"? Meaning walk around your home and look for items that might fit in this room? Or, shop Goodwill/thrift shop etc. looking for a comfy chair and side table for a corner, or a dresser if you need one. Focus on what would help to make your bedroom comfortable and functional... Do you need a small dressing table, reading corner, armoire, bench etc. Then start looking. You can always paint wood white!!

Donna, hit thrift stores and garage sales. Your Twin City Missions appears to offer furniture. Plus you're less than 50 miles from Round Top--their next sale is in April. I've been told that if you go the week before the actual opening you can find some spectacular bargains. (I'm a good two and a half hours from Round Top and have never made it myself.) I envy you your journey in thrifting items for your bedroom. Have fun!

Pinterest has tons of CF ideas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CojSlsMwDOg. Plates, washed baskets, sconces, etc... Love your colors & room so far!

@Debby Thanks for the compliment and for the great ideas.

What a gorgeous inspiration picture! The red looks like an orange red on my monitor which goes perfectly with gray! I can picture a worn painted wooden figurine in such a room - like a rabbit, hen or goose. I agree with the above - hit the thrift shops. A lovely chair with a woven throw draped over the back.

@Debra Those are some great ideas. I hadn't thought about animals for in there. Do you think lace curtains would be good?
  • Debra Debra on Jan 21, 2014
For my tastes, a lace curtain would be overdoing it. I would prefer to see something very simple at the windows. Perhaps even sheers with something interesting for the valance. Perhaps a toile of soft cream and gray or one that even has some gray and the red-orange in it? Come to think of it a soft orange-red print would be pretty too and you could echo the scallop. Now that I relook at the pix, I'd try a red french ticking valance. Simple, french, country!

@Debra It's so nice to get an outside opinion. I don't know about you but I can see how to decorate others places but when it comes to my home I freeze. My husband is building me a farmhouse bed with aromatic cedar in the center panel and I can't decide if I want to paint it black or white. What do you think? The walls are a light grey.
  • Debra Debra on Jan 22, 2014
Oooooo that sounds nice! I assume you are not painting the aromatic cedar? What color will it eventually age to? I have a black headboard and love it. The black headboard in the pix looks great with the bedding. I think white would be less sophisticated, but it can be heavy. Had you given any thought to a dark gray?

Craigslist has been a bargain hunters dream in my area when it comes to furniture, once the weather warms up yard and church sales can be good too

Well I finally finished my master bedroom. Here are a few pictures. My husband built the bed for me..

Think I might wallpaper the room. Would go with sheers under fabric for the windows and maybe add some tassles.

Great job so far, Donna! One suggestion: it's easy to paint lamp shades and I'd paint out the blue on yours with maybe a cream or white. The blue doesn't seem to blend in so well. As for Marion's suggestion of window dressing, she had me at tassels! Check out tutorials online to make your own. Don't use yarn, don't even use ribbon, just tear a coordinating fabric in strips and use that as your skirt layer, similar to what I did in the second photo. Good luck!

Your room is very nice and if you love it that's what counts, but, it isn't French Country if that's what you were going for. French Country is fussier and curvy and romantic with decorative details and to some extent feminine, in my opinion anyway. Your room appears more masculine with the bed and dressers and window coverings. That bed is great though, what a treasure, just not feminine.
