    Hello Holly,

You will need to form a wall or screen one room from the other. Block up or off one door (could be done by way of a bolt to stop access). Is this to be a temporary measure or permanent ? Do you have a floor plan of the rooms? Can you post pictures to help with reply? What is the construction of the building? Brick/Timber etc..........?

Can you share a drawing of the room layout now? With windows and doors marked? That will really help!

I would check to make sure any of part of a wall is not load bearing before any demo.

First make sure the diving wall isn’t load bearing. Then remove and close in the second door. Patch with Sheetrock and mud. Damp spring finish to smooth. Then paint. If you don’t want to put a new floor down, a rug over the transition should work. It’s a big job so unless you have a high skill level, I would hire it out.

If you could share a drawing of the rooms, we could help a lot more!

  • A drawing with the layout of both rooms as is delineating windows, doors and closets would be helpful along with any hallway or adjoing rooms. It can be done, but you will need some serious DIY skills. If need be, hire out the wall demo and flooring fill in if necessary, then you can focus on paint, decor and furniture placement.

  • Before you do anything, contact a structural engineer to ensure the wall is not load bearing and that your structure can manage this change.

I agree with Becky you need to make sure that there is not a load bearing wall. Your room can cave in if it is and you take out that wall.
