What are his favorite colors? Could that be a jumping off point to get started? All the gray tones are popular now. Great backdrop for almost acent color. Gray blue is nice too. Or some sort of green? In my experience, if they get to help choose colors, comforter, rug, accessories, first you can teach them how to coordinate things and if they love their space - they are much more likely to be tidier (oh those teenage years), and be proud of their space. Also an opportunity to teach shopping and budgeting skills. I would head to Home Depot, Lowes, any paint store, and gather the free paint chips. Tape to the wall and together narrow the possibilities. When down to the final 3 or 4, then buy samples and test before plonking down money for the entire room. If you do it together they will never forget.
This is a guest room we use for both genders. The walls are a soft blue the comforter is reversible. This bedding may not be available in your area but there are many similar patterns available. The tie backs on the curtains are child size belts, a nice masculine touch. There is a small desk to the right of the bed. I would choose a more masculine lamp, and I agree that letting your son help make the choices will assure he will love his room and take pride in it.
I saw someone using skateboards for shelving, that was really cool, also guitar necks with hooks for coats/hats/bookbag, baseball bats for curtain rods( other idea for curtain rods would be hockey stick, ski pole or fishing rod and more).
What are his fav colors? What are his fav activities? What are his needs in that room? I really think he should have a say in what he likes too. He is the one who will be living in the room
Mine wanted black as I remember and we agreed dark blue and windo wall white
Navy blue and white with whatever bright contrasting color he likes best, or perhaps a nice, rich brown with a blue (turquoise, bright blue, sky blue, etc.) contrasting accent?
Both of ours have black and white . That way, whatever sport, fad, musicians they are into that week--they can accessorize as they please .
