What would you do with this awkward nook?

Question

I have a very large master bedroom (20x25) but I have this awkward corner with windows that I can't figure out what to do with.   Currently we have the bed with the headboard against the wall on the right side of the photo.  We could move it elsewhere in the room, but this is the nicest location for privacy reasons.

I considered building in a window seat, but it is just too small.  The space is only about 3 feet wide.  I am even struggling to figure out a window treatment since the edge of the window is right against the closet wall.  I also considered ripping out the closet and eliminating the niche, but there isn't really a place to put in a new closet.

Since it's only three feet wide I'd find a nice chaise lounge to put there. My first thought was a desk for ones computer so you'd have a nice view while online, but you'd have to build one in order to fit that size. Which is possible if you have the tools. I love to read so I chaise would be my number one choice though.

I thought window seat, even if it is just a small bench. Could be  sort of toy box style with a lid that opened on a piano hinge for storage of bedding. That is where my brain goes, because we are so storage short in our own home.  I had a similar situation in my own bedroom, but no windows to contend with. I just had my husband build in shelves that will be curtained with vintage linens.  Replaced a dresser in a crowded room with hidden tubs for storage.  Windows change the argument.

I would make it into a desk area for writing, drawing or even using my lap top
or you could place a built in storage trunk to store extra blankets and such

I would seriously consider ripping out half of the closet and putting in ikea pax units only because those windows are the source of light for your room.  You could do a his and her if you needed more closet space and even wrap the units around the corner on the left.  If that's too much of a pain, then I'd just look for something like a stool or bench, even a small bookcase that fits under the window sills.

I like the bench idea, or a table and chair: some where to sit and put shoes on or sit and read a book....or a small desk (attach to back to wall and 2 front legs)  If there is no worry about privacy in the corner, I'd skip curtains, maybe a wide molding and potted plants on the sill and hang some from the ceiling there, or from swing brackets.

OK...maybe a bit old-fashioned (and the writer in me), but I would consider a nice little writing nook. It would be a place where I kept my cards and envelopes, stamps and markers, paper and pens, and when I write to friends (yes...snail mail type) I could look out, relax, and share.

I'd build shelves up to the bottom of the window & use the top for plants. Store books , shoes, etc.

a desk nook....with walls on three sides this would be very easy to do and the desk top could be set with cleats...and not need any support legs.

You have an electric outlet below so a desk lamp and laptop could be set up as well...a simple hole in the desk top to route the power cords.

I quess the architect was having a bad day when they planned the foot print of that room.   My daughters room has a nook but not with goofy corner windows.  We set up their space with a TV and Stereo in there...they can watch their DVD and listen to music and it does not eat up other space in the room.

I'm with KMS on this one.  A small desk area, without legs, and a pretty, simple chair, painted to match your decor.... perhaps a natural live-edge slab would provide warmth and interest.  As far as window treatment, some fabric roman shades would soften the harsh corner a bit.

I love the desk idea, but this room is actually attached to a full sized office.  (Like less than 10 steps away!) So that is a little redundant. :(   The other odd thing about the niche, is that it is almost as deep as it is wide.    I do love the idea of reducing the closet length and putting in PAX.  We had that closet system in our old house and it was great.

A nice oversized ottoman the width of the space would give you a perch for putting on socks and shoes and for holding the throw pillows from the bed at night. (It could b a storage ottoman).  Coordinate fabric with window treatments.  Or a big plant or plant stand with smaller plants.

I like Carroll A.'s idea of a table with a lamp.  A lamp in the window always looks nice and then a comfy chair, at an angle in front of the table.  As Carroll said, a reading/dressing area.  Actually, all the ideas are great.  The possibilities of a little corner like that are endless when it comes to this crowd!

A table with a lamp is what is there now.. On the other side of the closet is the office, and from where the picture is shot is another wall and the entrance to the bathroom.   Here are some more pics (this is not my furniture.. it is an MLS listing photo)

Instead of making anything permanent...any construction would harm your floor and at a later date be more trouble! I would look for one of those oversized ottomans where the cover comes off for storage to hold extra blankets and/or pillows and use it as a place to sit and put on socks and shoes as Ellen has suggested.  At night it could serve as a place to hold your extra pillows and bedspread.  What is built in today is out of use tomorrow and it takes effort and money to redo.  Furniture can be a temporary solution and can be changes with the trends!

I would put a window seat with a padded top.  This could give you some storage and a place to sit to put on shoes, etc.

Depending on your budget for improvements, consider creating a walk-in closet incorporating the window. No need for window treatments, and it brings natural light into your closet. If the other window in the room provides enough light, it may be a great solution. Good luck!

I agree with Tessa! I vote window seat with storage! You could pull a lap table over to you to work on the laptop & be able to look out the window! Snuggle up in it with blanket, hot coco & cat in the winter!

@Maria D It is my house, but it is a duplex so I cannot close up the windows or move them or anything that would change the exterior facade.  The floor of the closet is actually Cedar, not oak.   I would have to repair the floors.
