I'm not sure firepit is the correct name for this, but that's what I choose to call it. It was purchased at a yard/garage/tag sale for $1. I've wanted one for years, but was just too frugal, well, most would say too cheap to buy a new one. lol I could have painted it fancier, like painting the base a bright color, and painting the mesh a different color than the trim, but it's a firepit, so didn't go to the extra trouble.
Here is the top view of the firepit.  You can see all the dings in the mesh.
Here is the bottom view.  As you can see, it was very rusted, the top had all kinds of dings in the mesh part, and there were a few pin holes in the bottom part where it had rusted through.
I started with the base.  Using 220 grit sandpaper, I sanded down the rust, and then took a damp towel over it, then let it dry thoroughly.  Then, using Rust-Oleum High Heat spray paint in high heat black, I spray painted it a couple coats.
Next thing I did was to sand the top, and I tried to get some of the dings out of the mesh.  I didn't get them all, but it's much better than it was.  I then painted it with the high heat paint, covering it 3 times, top and bottom.
I took this picture while the paint was wet, it actually dries a flat or satin black.  I sanded it on top and bottom, then damp clothed it to get the dust off, and let it dry.  I used 5 coats on this piece, just because it is where most of the heat will be.  There were a few pin holes in the bottom, but I didn't cover them, but left them there for drain holes, and just made sure the paint got into the holes well.
This is what it looks like now that it's done.  It was such an easy project to do, and I now have the firepit that I've wanted for a long time.
