Coffee Table From Pallet Wood

My husband and I like to make tables. We try to find a pretty base and then create a top. Much of the time we use wood slabs from the sawmill. This time I wanted to try pallet wood.
We got pallets from a local store for $2.00 each. My husband took off the boards using a hammer and crowbar and good old fashioned muscle.
We washed the boards and let them dry. They are different widths and colors but that did not worry me.
After they dried, we lightly sanded them and I oiled them with coconut oil. I LOVE the writing on some of them.
This is the metal base. We bought it at thrift store for $3.00. We attached 2 x 2 wood sticks on each side of the table base. We used simple metal clamps.
Then we attached each board to the frame. I laid them out first just to see how they would look. We had exactly enough good boards. Whew! We used regular wood screws.
We waited until the end to cut off the excess. I wanted 3 inches on each side of the base. We measured and then used a skill saw to cut. I then sanded the edges and rounded them a little.
I added 3 coats of high gloss polyurethane.
It turned out beautifully. We plan to see it but, truthfully, it might stay here in my home.

I have a wood table that is vintage and looks just like that. The top was a Formica marble thin piece glued on press board. I took it off and it is 1/4. I'm going to replace with shiplap

How well did the poly stick to the coconut oil? Did you use oil based poly? I've got a tray that I've used coconut oil on for a couple years but now has a couple water spots. I was planning on sanding it down then throwing on a couple coats of matte poly but i haven't messed with it because I'm afraid it won't stick with all the oil I've used
Seems like the key to this is finding a metal table base ready to go at a thrift store...are there a lot of these around?
Looks like he has a 3rd piece of wood in the middle? How did he attach that to the side pieces?
