DIY Bed Frame and Head Board

I love both the headboard and the bed frame of this bed, but these were not my design. I learned how to make this bed frame from the Modern Builds channel on Youtube and you should definitely go to his youtube channel for a detailed tutorial. This frame is actually fairly simple to make if you are familiar with using a drill! It is made of four 1x4s, four 1x2s, and seven 2x2s. Start by make a rectangle out of the 1x4s, measuring 80 in x 60 in. Then line the inside of the box with 1x2s measuring 78.5 in x 60 in. Every time that I would screw board together on this bed I would start by using wood glue, predrilling, then drilling the boards together.

You will then be adding a 2x2 measuring 78.5 inches in the middle of your frame. Again, I used wood glue, predrilled, then drilled the screw from the outside of the frame.

Now you are ready to move on to the legs of the bed. This is simply making another rectangle. This time you will take two 2x2s measuring 57 inches and then use the scraps of those boards to make two cuts at 10.5 inches and 7.5 inches. Screw these boards together like it is shown below. Repeat this step so that you have two of these.

Now you will flip the frame of your bed upside down so you can attach these legs to the bottom of your bed. Again, use wood glue, predrill, drill. I use 2.5 inch wood screws to attach these legs. You will then add two more 2x2s measruing 77 inches to the left and right side of the bed frame.

Once I was done with this, I brought my bed frame up to the room to screw in all of the slats and the two support legs that will attach to the middle support piece.

I chose to use 10 1x4s measuring 60 inches, but I am sure you can use more or less depending on what you think is right. the support pieces for the middle measure 7.5 inches and I just screwed those in from the top of the middle support piece. And just like that you have a bed frame.

I initally stained this bed, but they realized I hated the stain, so ended up sanding the whole things down again.....NOT FUN! But well worth it to get the look I was going for.

Now on to the headboard. For the headboard you will need six 1x4s. I just saw a picture of this and didn't have exact measurements of what I needed, so I kind of had to make it up. I did know that I wanted the bottom layer of horizontal slats to start around 22 inches from the bottom of the vertical boards, because that is about right where the top of the mattress was hitting. So I decided to just lay some 1x4s out on the floor and play around with where the the boards would lay.

Then I needed to figure out what degree to cut my boards for the point. I started at 15 degrees, and that is what is shown in the picture above. But once I screwed all the boards together and put it up I decided the point was way too high and didn't like it.

So then I took the whole headboard apart, cut the boards again at 6 degrees and it turned out PERFECT! I just used 1.25 inch wood screws to drill from the top and behind to make it nice and secure. Then attached it to the bed frame with 2 in screws....after i decided to sand the whole thing to make it look natural again!
