Does your kitchen desperately need more counter and storage space? Here is how to make your own easy DIY rolling Ikea kitchen island! And you can do it in an afternoon!

I wanted a rolling island with extra storage, but one that was small enough to fit in my long L-shaped kitchen. I couldn't find a pre-made one that I liked so I designed my own custom one!

I wanted drawers and hidden storage, as well as open shelves in the island. The base is a (aff. link) Kallax shelf unit. We added locking casters to make it easy to move.

We added an insert with a door on the bottom left shelf and an (aff. link) insert with 2 drawers on the top right shelf.

Next, we attached 2 Ikea bamboo cutting boards to the top of the unit, using 8 Command strips (4 for each cutting board) so they wouldn't slide around.

I keep measuring cups and spoons in the drawers and my rice cooker in the area with the door. I stored a basket with small items and my crockpot on the 2 open shelves.

Here is the finished island. There is plenty of storage and another area of counter space. It's easy to move around my kitchen, and looks nice, too. See all of the steps in my post, plus more pictures.
