I was given a louvered door for free! We knew we wanted to make a hall tree out of it, but we weren't sure if we had all the pieces to make one. Until . . .

Shelving from a closet remodel became available. We cut it down to the same width of the door. The shelving was a wood color and sealed. It was not the look we’re going for, so both the door and the shelving got a slight sanding and painted a couple coats of a country white color.

Here we are just trying to get an idea of how this is all going to work together.

We found this mirror and spray painted it a gray accent to go with the country white.

These two spindles were free from a neighbor! They got spray-painted the gray color too. We also sanded every piece of this for that distressed look that we love.

At first I thought we could attach the legs using a Kraig jig. That wasn’t very successful so we ended up using small L brackets to attach the spindles on the front of both of the shelves.

This worked much better and it made it more stable in my opinion. I do love my Kraig jig, but for some reason I just couldn’t get this one to work with this application. Operator error I’m sure!

So with the bottom shelf attached, we put the cleat on the top shelf first then attached it to the louver door. It was just easier to us this way. Less bending for bodies that are aging. 🤪

Here is the hall tree laying on its backside. On the bottom, we cut off part of the spindle and attached it to the bottom side of the shelf so it looked like it was going all the way through. On the louver side, the backside, we put cleats to rest the shelving on. We then used “L” brackets to attach it to the cleat. We know there are other ways to do this, but this worked for us.

Here is the back of the door. Someone had put a sheet of luan over it. Made it easier to paint!

And here it is done!

Oh, we found a couple of hooks and sprayed them the same gray color and added them to either side of the mirror. A place to hang your coat, hat, keys, purse etc.

The mirror is hanging by a hook and so can be easily moved to the height of the new owner. This also could be used as a coffee bar.

And. . . so many other possibilities!
